Some Nights

A few minutes ago, a friend of mine sent me a link to this song, which I'm sure most of you are familiar with:

Now, I'm not usually one to listen to much modern pop music. I don't have anything especially against it, I just prefer other genres and styles. I believe I first heard this song on the radio, or maybe at a GSP dance, and at that point I didn't pay any particular attention to the lyrics. Musically speaking, it was energetic and anthem-like, so I didn't mind it, but I did not give it much thought beyond that - assuming it would be about love or loss or an idea similarly often captured in pop music.




When I was sent this link a few minutes ago, I made a point to look up the lyrics specifically and see if I could find some deeper meaning to them. On first glance, it clearly seems to focus on the War on Terror, with lyrics like: 

• "This is it, boys, this is war, what are we waiting for? Why don't we break the rules already?" and "Who the ---- wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?"

supporting that. However, not everything really fit perfectly with that idea, and I had the sense that there was something more that I was missing. With that in mind here's what I came up for my interpretation:

"Some Nights" is about, at least on some levels, the fact that to do something that they truly are passionate, people often have to make heavy personal sacrifices. It's based around feelings the artist has with his career, about how he's given up so much and distanced himself from people he cares about to be successful; 'some nights' he really just gets tired of it. It focuses on fears people have that they won't be happy with their life years down the road, that they'll end up with disappointments and regrets - but maybe it will be worth it in the end.

If I were to work this into a single theme statement, it might look something like: In the search for success and happiness, people often feel that they make large personal sacrifices and hurt their relationships with family and those close to them, which can lead to regrets and fears about their decisions.

Putting together these ideas, I realized that this song and it's meaning really speaks a lot to how I've been feeling lately. Especially considering my Senior year of high school and the looming decision over where I'm going to spend the next several years of my life, I'm really afraid that I'll make a mistake or regret my decision. That's not to mention moving away from my family and friends, which will be difficult at best. 

I want to look at a few of the more powerful lyrics of "Some Nights" and see how they fit in with this idea: 

• "Well some nights, I wish that this all would end 'Cause I could use some friends for a change And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again"

This clearly expresses the loneliness that the songwriter experienced through the course of his career. To become successful, he's lost his friends and his love, and often wishes that he could regain those lost feelings.

• "Man you wouldn't believe, the most amazing things, that can come from, some terrible nights, ah (oh whoa, oh whoa, oh whoa, oh oh)"

This, on the other hand, expresses a more hopeful tone: yes, success can require some hard work and hard choices, but in the end, there's a lot to gain from the results.



This is, of course, only my interpretation and one of many, I'm sure. What do you all think - do you agree with what I said? Have anything to add the ideas? Any general comments on the song itself?
